It would be quite easy to pick a whale out of a line up, but other than that, there is very little that we actually know about these fantastic creatures. We have had a fascination about this mammal for many years now, but generally anything that we know about them has been learned by watching television. We do know that it is the world’s largest mammal, but if you were asked to tell the three most interesting and factual things about whales, you might find it hard to come up with even one. - They travel long distances – A grey whale makes one of the longest migrations known to man and the whale travels around 16,000 km round trip to get to where it wants to go. That is an extraordinary feat of strength and direction, you and I would find it incredibly difficult to cover this kind of distance driving a car, never mind having to walk that length of time. It truly is a fantastic feat of nature and is a testament to the whale’s resilience.
- They live a long time – The bowhead whale, for example, can live for up to and above 200 years. That is an incredibly long time to be on this Earth and must be so much that these whales have seen and experienced over this length of time. Even killer whales can live for more than 100 years.
- Impressive diving statistics – Certain types of whales have been known to dive to great distances. They have been known to dive as much as 1.9 miles down, and have stayed submerged for more than two hours. That is an impressive statistic no matter how you look at it.
